Glucose and Ketone Testing Starter Guide
Why do you need to test? How often should you test? What numbers should you be looking for? All you need to know to get started!
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO TEST YOUR GLUCOSE AND KETONES?
We encourage testing your blood for a couple of reasons.
The ultimate goal of our program is to help women better understand how different foods affect their metabolism in an effort to help them prevent the common mistakes that sabotage weight-loss success. We encourage success by being in tune with our bodies and how they respond to certain foods.
To do this, we not only keep track of what we are eating but also by looking at how the foods we are consuming are affecting our glucose (blood sugar).
The modern western diet is packed with tons of high-glycemic foods and refined carbohydrates that tend to spike our blood sugar & keep our insulin levels elevated all the time time. Elevated insulin levels prevent our body from being able to burn fat for fuel.
When we take in way more of the glucose than our bodies can process, it leads to elevated insulin levels and when our insulin levels get high, there are so many negative health effects, the most common of which is weight gain (and subsequently difficulty losing weight) which we obviously want to help you avoid.
GOAL NUMBERS: WHAT SHOULD I AIM FOR WHEN TESTING?
We recommend looking at both your glucose and your ketones each day during the 28-Day Metabolism Reset.
For the first week or so, you'll be establishing a baseline, but then, as you cut out sugar and refined carbs, you should notice that your glucose will likely start to decrease. Within a few days, it will hopefully stay below 100 after an overnight fast. (Ruth tries to stay in the 70-100 range.)
Your ketone levels will increase more slowly, and it may take up to 7-10 days before you are in full ketosis. Ideally, your ketones will be somewhere between. .5 and 3.
WHEN TO TEST AND HOW OFTEN
At a minimum, you will want to test your blood each morning of the 28-Day Metabolism Reset—about 45 minutes to 1 hour after you wake up in the morning.
You also want to make sure you test prior to working out or consuming anything in order to get an accurate reading (food and exercise can cause small spikes in your glucose levels).
